Romantic Piano

Romantic piano encompasses

a world of hope. It is difficult

tolabel the music of Esperanza

into one genre, so I innovated

a new one: romantic piano.

Though the music is completely

instrumental and piano, its not

necessarily “New Age” or

“Relaxation” or what have

you. Romantic piano not only

creates a story in each song,

but also encompasses an

overarching emotion over the

entire work.

Some of the songs actually do

have lyrics. Tell Me a Secret,

I Once Dreamed, and

Esperanza all actually have

lyrics. But sometimes words are

superfluous and create distractions (just as music sometimes can as well). The musical composition of romantic piano is for the composer—NOT the audience. Thus, the emphasis of the work lies within the composer. Once the product is produced, though, it becomes the inspiration and interpretation of each individual of the audience. Each piece may tell each person his or her own story through pure, simple music.

An overarching technical concept of Romantic Piano is the use of rubato throughout. The music being very fluid, is totally at the mercy of the performer. Even so, structure within this subgenre is both similar and different. For example, the structural composition of Tell Me a Secret is very laid out and specific, whereas excerpts like Burnt Norton are at times even completely without a noticeable time signature.

But organically, the most important aspect of Romantic Piano is the romance. Even though most of the album Esperanza does so, not every piece is based off of the literal aspect of romance and intimacy. The romanticism correlates back to hope. There is hope in romance and romance in hope, and this does not refer to romance in the “love” sense, but rather the sense that we all romanticize in life. The fact that we are dreamers, we who live in the clouds. You cannot take away the hope, thus the romance, from the Dreamer.
